Culinary Usages - Use in tea blends and infusions. May also be encapsulated as a dietary supplement. 

Blue cohosh is a member of the barberry family and is indigenous to North America. The root of the plant was widely used by Native Americans for various conditions of significance to women, which gave rise to alternative common names like squaw root and papoose root.

The main active constituent in blue cohosh root is caulosaponin, a glycoside that occurs in this plant exclusively. Because this compound isn’t water soluble, black cohosh root is most commonly prepared as an alcohol-based tincture. However, aside from exerting potential estrogen-like effects, caulosaponin increases blood flow by causing blood vessels to constrict. Consult your physician before using this herb if you have a history of stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes or glaucoma.

Precautions - Blue Cohosh should only be used under medical supervision. It can be irritating to the mucous membranes and can cause contact dermatitis. Blue Cohosh should be avoided by anyone with high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, glaucoma or a history of stroke. Do not take Blue Cohosh if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
