Cosmetic Usages - Ground black walnut hulls are used to produce a natural rinse to darken hair. The powdered hulls are also added to scrubs and powders (for color).

The powdered hulls of black walnuts, which have a high tannin content, are made into tinctures and topical preparations. Because the hulls are also high in iodine, the powdered form is used as a supplement in regions where sea vegetables are in short supply. During the Chernobyl nuclear disaster the areas in the fallout zone ran out of potassium iodide and sea weed sources of iodine. They used black walnut tincture as an iodine supplement by painting people’s knee skin with it. It was effective in preventing radiation poisoning of the thyroid in those treated with it. To use it as an iodine supplement paint the tincture on the skin of the knees, rather than taking it internally.

Precautions - Proceed with caution with any oral intake of black walnut tree bark as it has a measured toxicity.
