Origin - USA
Flavor Profile - Mint flavored. Goes well with many other herbs and serves as a background or base for tea blends.
Culinary Usages - Brew alone or with other herbs as tea. The herb is also used as seasoning in Indian cuisine.
Cosmetic Usages - Use infused spearmint oil and alcohol tinctures of the herb to make soap, shampoo, lotions and other cosmetics.
Household Usages - Tinctures or strong infusions may be used in natural cleaning formulas. Place teabags of spearmint in areas where rodent activity has been observed to discourage their return.
Aromatic Usages - Alcoholic extracts of spearmint are used in perfumery.
Spearmint is a member of the mint family that is widely distributed throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Our domestic spearmint is a hybrid of uncertain origin, but with a naturalized range that includes the U.S.
The dried leaf is commonly used in Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines. The herb is also tinctured or used to make syrup.
In Morocco, spearmint is combined with green tea to produce a traditional beverage called Tuareg tea. Be aware that when visiting the region, you can expect to be served three helpings of this tea at the same sitting and that it is considered an insult for a guest to decline any of them.
