Spearmint is a member of the mint family that is widely distributed throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Our domestic spearmint is a hybrid of uncertain origin, but with a naturalized range that includes the U.S.

Spearmint came to America during the Colonial period. As yet untaxed by the English government, the herb became a popular tea substitute during the American Revolution. Spearmint then became a significant cash crop in Connecticut. Its popularity returned during the American Civil War when black tea, which had to be imported, became scarce.

Powdered spearmint leaf is used sparingly as seasoning in baking or to flavor various beverages. It is also encapsulated as a dietary supplement. However, one most common use for the powdered herb is in making natural toothpaste powder and mouthwash. Powdered spearmint leaf is also incorporated into body and skin care formulas, including lotions, shampoos and soaps.

In Morocco, spearmint is combined with green tea to produce a traditional beverage called Tuareg tea. Be aware that when visiting the region, you can expect to be served three helpings of this tea at the same sitting and that it is considered an insult for a guest to decline any of them.
