Botanical Name - Chimaphila umbellata
Other Names - Dragon's Tongue, Spotted Wintergreen, Prince's Pine, King's Cure, Ground Holly, Love in Winter. Rheumatism Weed.
Origin - USA
Flavor Profile - Has a mildly bitter flavor. Combine with sweet-tasting herbs to enhance flavor.
Culinary Usages - Typically used to make tea. May also be encapsulated or tinctured.
Cosmetic Usages - Infuse in oil to make salves, balms and other topical products. The herb is also applied as a warm, moist poultice.
The Cherokee and Cree routinely used pipissewa for food and also to produce teas and poultices. The common name for this plant translates from Cree to mean, "to break into small pieces."
The herb is used commercially to flavor candy and soda, root beer in particular. Pipsissewa may also be brewed as tea or used to make tinctures and infused oils for use in cosmetics. Pipsissewa is often combined with uva ursi in tinctures and teas.
Precautions - Check with your doctor before using this herb if you have a history of liver disease. May increase the effects of diuretic medications. Do not use during pregnancy.
