Goldenseal root refers to the yellow tuberous root of Hydrastis canadensis.

Goldenseal is a member of the Ranunculaceae family, which includes the common buttercup. The root is more commonly used in the traditional Chinese and Indian wellness systems, but the aerial parts of the plant exert similar properties. The common denominator is the presence of a plant alkaloid called berberine that has significant antibacterial and antifungal properties. Although the herb has been used in Asia for centuries, goldenseal is native to eastern North America.

Currently, goldenseal is classified as an endangered species due to over-harvesting and mountain top removal mining. Because the removal or transplant of wild goldenseal without a permit is unlawful and irresponsible, most goldenseal on the market today is farm cultivated.

Use in the preparation of skin and eye washes, liniments, sprays, salves and ointments.

Goldenseal root is a traditional ingredient in herbal bitters.

Precaution - The bitter alkaloids responsible for the antibacterial activity of goldenseal include berberine, hydrastine and canadine. However, check with your doctor before using this herb if you take pharmaceutical medications or have a history of heart disease or high blood pressure because of possible interactions. Canadine, for example, acts like a calcium channel blocker and berberine may interfere with the metabolism of certain drugs, including antidepressants.
