Culinary Usages - Decoct to make tea, tonics and syrups. Licorice root may also be tinctured. The sticks may also be chewed.
Licorice is a plant related to beans and peas that is native to Asia and introduced to Europe by Dominican friars in the 15th century. The plant is harvested for its stolon-like roots, which harbor a compound that produces a taste many 50 times sweeter than sucrose.
Precautions - Do not use long-term or take in high dosages due to the risk of potassium depletion. If you have a known heart condition or high blood pressure, check with your doctor before using this herb.
