Origin - USA
Flavor Profile - Bitter and acrid due to the presence of carboxylic acids and piperidine alkaloids. Not recommended for culinary use.
Typical Preparations - Infuse in oil or make strong water infusions for use in salves, lotions and other topical formulations. The herb may also be tinctured for external use.
Cosmetic Usages - Powdered herb makes a fine salve, ointment, poultice or chest rub. The preferred methods of preparation include infusion and tincturing using vinegar instead of alcohol as the macerate.
Also known as Indian tobacco, lobelia has a long history of use by various Native American tribes. The herb is also referred to as puke weed and gag root, which suggests that ingesting large amounts of this herb isn't advisable.
Dried lobelia is most often tinctured or used to make strong infusions for herbal ointments, salves and liniments.
Precautions - May induce vomiting if ingested, even in small amounts.
