Flavor Profile - Bland, mucilaginous
Typical Preparations - As a tea. The ground or whole husk must always be taken with at least 1 full glass of water. May also be taken as an extract or capsule form though rare. Because of its rather neutral flavor it may be added to most food dishes.
Culinary Usages - Gluten-free baking, where ground psyllium seed husks bind moisture and help make breads less crumbly.
Other Usages - Animal feed. - horse, goat, buffalow, cow
Psyllium seed husks are the actual coating of mucilage around the seed of the plant Plantago ovata, (genus Plantago), a native of India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Husks are considered pure dietary fiber They are hygroscopic, which allows them to expand and become mucilaginous.
Psyllium seed husk are indigestible and are a source of soluble dietary fiber. Its nutritional value consists mainly of glycosides, proteins, polysaccharides, vitamin B1, and choline. Fiber content of over 80% compared to less than 15% for oat bran and 10% for wheat bran.
The husk is composed mostly of a fiber called hemicellulose which is a complex carbohydrate found in whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
Hemicellulose is undigestible, however, it is partially broken down in the colon and feeds the friendly intestinal flora.
Precautions - "Directions: (Select one of the following, as appropriate: "Take" or "Mix") this product (child or adult dose) with at least 8 ounces (a full glass) of water or other fluid. Taking this product without enough liquid may cause choking.
