Yohimbe bark is obtained from a small evergreen tree that grows in west Africa, especially Cameroon and Nigeria. The bark is harvested from mature trees in a manner that doesn’t harm the tree or impede its growth. For centuries, the bark has been used to make infusions and decoctions and in recent decades has become a popular over-the-counter supplement. The active constituent in the bark is an alkaloid known as yohimbine, the standardized form of which is yohimbine hydrochloride.
Traditionally, yohimbe is used to enhance libido. Its action is thought to be due to an alkaloid called yohimbine, which is also found in periwinkle, Indian snakewood and other plants. Because the flavor of the dried bark is unpleasant, powdered yohimbe is usually tinctured.
